Welcome to AcidRain Airlines - Where flight prices are ARRRGHmazing.
About usAcidRain Airlines was founded in Swden in 1872, the same time as the discovery of Acid Rain itself. But was moved to the US in the 1950s for further development, as that is where the primary research on acid rain was conducted.
Acid rain is an environmental occurance where particles in the atmosphere have picked up chemicals that lower the pH of their substance. These particles not only occur in rain, but in other forms of wet and dry particles. Examples of wet transportation are rain, fog and snow; while dry may be dust or smoke. These wet or dry particles of acidic substance are created in a number of ways such as production through natural volcanoes, lightning and decaying plants and also human influences such as electricity plants and the burning of fossil fuels. The main chemicals present in acid rain are sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NO). These chemicals mix with chemicals present in the atmosphere to create acidic compounds that are carried through the air. While usual water has a neutral pH of 7.0, normal rain is identified as having a pH of 5.5 or lower however as of 2000 acid rain have a pH of around 4.3 (based on an average figure of the United States.) The measure of acidity is the measuring of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution. The more hydrogen ions - the more acidic the substance is. |
The above gif visual represents in simple terms the cycle of our particle-planes.
The sulfur dioxide is oxidised by reacting with a hydroxyl to form HOSO2, which then reacts with the oxegen in the air to form water (H2O) and sulfur trioxide (SO3). Sulfur trioxide quickly becomes the high corrosive sulfuric acid (H2SO4) when mixed with water. Nitrogen dioxide also reacts with the hydroxide to form also the also highly corrosive Nitric Acid (HNO3) Equasions Sulfuric acid: SO2 + OH --> HOSO2 or S03 + H20 --> H2SO4 H2SO4 dissociates and breaks apart in H2O to produce extra hydrogen ions as so: H2SO4 --> HSO4- + H+ HSO4- may also further dissociate for another hydrogen ion: HSO4- --> SO2- + H+ 4 Nitric acid: NO2 + OH --> HNO3 |
